The next morning, I gathered up my gun. I thanked the Beaumonts for teaching me and asked if they didn’t mind watching Sleeper and Biter for a little longer. I wasn’t a shepherd, and I had a new job I needed to do—even if I was bad at it. “I’m going to go and find that girl.”

René looked confused for a moment. Part of me wanted to hate him for that, but it wasn’t his job. It was mine. “You mean the one who went missing from town? Anna-Marie?” he asked. “I told you, no one really expects you to—”

“But there isn’t a sheriff!” And it didn’t matter what anyone else expected me to do. I knew what was needed. I was going to worry if there was trouble, and if I couldn’t help Belle, then I had to help someone. I turned toward the door. “I’m the Alpha Hunter, so I’m going to find that girl.”

“Really? You are?” René took another moment to look at Rosalie and all the others in the house like he was asking permission. Then he grabbed his coat and followed after me like any good wolf in a pack. “All right, let’s go.”
